What are benzocaine mouth gel, ointment, solution, or dental paste? (Back to top)
BENZOCAINE (Oratect®, Benzodent®, Dentapaine®, Orabase-B®, Anbesol®, Oragel®, Num-Zit®) causes loss of feeling on the skin and in the mouth to relieve mouth pain. Generic benzocaine mouth products are available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•mouth sores or infection
•an unusual or allergic reaction to benzocaine, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine? (Back to top)
Benzocaine is applied to the affected area of the mouth or gums with a clean fingertip, cotton, or a cotton swab. Make sure to wash your hands before and after using this medicine. Dental ointment can be applied to cleaned and dried dentures before use. Follow the directions of your prescriber or health care professional carefully. Do not apply more, or more often than recommended.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with benzocaine mouth products? (Back to top)
•sulfa drugs

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines that you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from using benzocaine mouth products? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•itching, redness, swelling, pain, and rash
Very rare with benzocaine mouth products:
•difficulty breathing
•dizziness or drowsiness
•fast or slow heartbeat
•headache
•increased sweating
•restlessness, nervousness, anxiety
•seizures (convulsions)
•swelling of the face
•tremor

What should I watch for while taking benzocaine mouth products? (Back to top)
Benzocaine mouth products are not for long-term use. Do not use for more than one week without checking with your prescriber or health care professional. Contact your prescriber or health care professional, or dentist if your condition does not improve within a few days or if you notice redness, itching or swelling.

The affected area of your mouth will be numb, try to avoid injury to that area. To avoid biting the tongue or cheek, or difficulty swallowing, do not chew gum or food until the numbness wears off.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees C (59 and 77 degrees F); do not freeze. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
